Evidence 10: EDT 655 – Grant Proposal – “Communication Station” Digital Media Lab (file available on Home page)
Rationale 10: This grant proposal was completed in application for the Waukesha Education Foundation 2014 grant. The “Communication Station” will serve as the digital media creation and production lab at the Waukesha STEM Academy. With physical construction to the space to occur during July of 2014, technology components are needed to further serve in the space to be utilized by all 500+ WSA students and staff. Offering students the space and necessary technology to complete audio and visual presentations that match their endless creativity and innovation around their learning will be a key component in moving our school forward regarding implementation of our 1:1 mobile device initiative for our district.
The grant proposal and application writing process was very influential in my development as an education professional. Through this work, I found myself becoming very passionate about connecting student learning beyond just individual content areas and disciplines. In my work on the grant concept, proposal, and outcomes it was very easy for me to create connections across subject area and standards with the incorporation of the technology tools proposed. With the partnership created between WSA and the Carroll University Communications Department, I have seen work begin to create future connections for all learners at WSA and beyond. Knowing that with the tools and space soon to be in place, this type of digital creation will have a great impact on student learning and completion of our school mission and vision for creative and innovative learners of the future. I know curricular integration through digital media and technology will continue to influence my teaching practice as well as my future work in grant writing.
KSD
10.K.1 The teacher understands schools as organizations within the larger community context and understands the operations of the relevant aspects of the system(s) within which s/he works.
The grant proposal is demonstration of this knowledge of the larger community because of the partnership between our school and the Carroll University Communications Department that is being established. With my grant work as the lead catalyst of this opportunity, I have taken the responsibility of connecting students learning experiences (primarily in the Common Core Standards of Speaking and Listening) with outside partnerships. With plans for both staff development and team planning time with both schools (Carroll faculty and WSA staff), as well as opportunities for University students to lead instructional coaching sessions/mini-lessons, this partnership will be able to extend relevant learning for students beyond the four walls for their classroom and into the context of post-graduate studies and the community at large.
10.S.1 The teacher participates in collegial activities designed to make the entire school a productive learning environment.
Within the grant proposal, work with the school Vanguard team (technology team) highlights my participation in collegial activities for a productive learning environment. As team leader, my role is to not only help facilitate this team in moving our school forward with its technological practices and instruction, but as part of the grant proposal, lead the team in its analysis of how the digital presentation tools and and spaces are being utilized by our entire school. With curriculum and instructional purposes as the focus, the Vanguard team will need to use the data from the grant proposal to then facilitate and lead staff professional development throughout the year.
10.D.5 The teacher is willing to work with other professionals to improve the overall learning environment for students.
While not necessarily in the job description of your average elementary school music teacher, I have taken it upon myself to seek out opportunities, like the grant proposal highlights, to improve the learning experiences for all students at my school beyond just those that are musical or connected to only my curriculum. With my passion for technology and its amazing implication on instructional practice and student learning, I have found that opportunities, like written in the grant proposal for collaboration and partnerships, to be truly rewarding and and inspiring. I am lucky that the Waukesha STEM Academy is a place that encourages this type of collaboration between colleagues and professionals within the building and beyond.
