Standard 7: Instructional Planning. The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and curriculum goals.

Evidence 7: EDT 670 Mobile Device Lesson Plan

Rationale 7: This set of lessons and plans were designed for continued work and development of music literacy skills for students in the Level 3 (4th and 5th grade mulit-age) music classroom. With a focus on the application of the music literacy skills for performance, students work to develop foundational rhythmic skills through practice and feedback opportunities, and also to use their abilities and new learning toward practical application using mobile device technology. This lesson will be taught in the 2014- 2015 school year to align with the school curriculum map and curriculum integration opportunities with Physical Education and Math content areas.

While music literacy, and especially rhythmic literacy, is such a foundational piece to all part of music education, it is often hard to demonstrate to students the impact and relevancy it has on all parts of music and their lives. In developing the instructional plan for these lessons, I found that was able to create a true relevant and meaningful connections for the students in their application of their work to a larger, integrated unit. While the daily music coursework and final product and assessments serve as demonstration of proficiency toward the music standards, I truly gained a deeper knowledge of how to plan my curricular components while keeping the overall curricular goal, students personalized learning needs, and subject matter in mind, using this to serve as a model for future lessons and planning. The mobile device technology serves as key component in my facilitation of this work and dramatically assists in students self-pacing, guided practice, and assessment of the creation and application of learning.

KSD

7.K.1 The teacher understands learning theory, subject matter, curriculum development, and student development to plan instruction and to meet curriculum goals based on content standards.

This set of lesson plans highlights some key scaffolding and curriculum development components, especially in the areas of student vocabulary use, its application to larger curriculum concepts and development of rhythmic skill and accuracy in performance . My knowledge of how students learn and then in turn use these ideas is clear in the planning for these lessons along with the guided practice and feedback occurring throughout the learning process. Curriculum goals, targets and standards can easily be achieved by all learners, according to their needs and personalized pacing as shown in these lessons.

7.S.1 As an individual and a member of a team, the teacher selects and creates learning experiences that are appropriate for curriculum goals, relevant to learners, and based upon principles of effective instruction (e.g. that activate students’ prior knowledge, anticipate preconceptions, encourage exploration and problem-solving, and build new skills on those previously acquired).

This set of lesson plans clearly demonstrates my ability to create the learning experiences for students that will both accomplish the curricular goals but also continue to be relevant and engaging to all learners. Through the use of technology in conjunction with effective music instruction, I encourage students to explore and create with their mobile devices, all while planning for activities and instruction that focus on the hands-on, performance based experiences at the heart of instructing young, developing musicians.

7.D.1 The teacher values both long-term and short-term planning.

This lesson set demonstrates both long and short term planning opportunities for both myself, the instructor, and the students. With opportunities for guided goal setting for students during the daily lessons and activities, as well as the overall final project, students will be very aware and reflective of the outcomes and opportunities for demonstration of proficiency throughout this process. Each lesson sequentially scaffolds upon the work and prior knowledge of the student, along with a long range goal and final product in mind. The final products/outcomes of musical learning will also serve as the building blocks for an integrated unit with Physical Education and Math standards.
